What I Do

User Research and Analytics

I have experience facilitating both formal and informal user interviews, observation sessions and fact finding workshops as well as formulating survey questions and using analytics to measure success. If data such as Google Analytics is available it can also be valuable in giving context to anecdotes and insights gained in conversations with users. This process continues throughout the project lifecycle - with each stage being tested and tweaked so that the final functionality and design has been thoroughly interrogated.

User Experience - Wireframes

Using Sketch, Figma or XD - or even just a whiteboard, the initial layout, flow and functionality is mapped out based on proposed user journeys, research findings + business requirements. Wireframes should be low fi to start with but can evolve into designed layouts - These are iterated through with users and stakeholders until a basic storyboard is formed to base a prototype on. Wireframes are used to gather the first round of feedback from users and stakeholders. How detailed the wireframes are depends largely on the project and team, in some cases they are used to visualise and refine a user journey and in others they are simply a springboard for conversations.

User Experience - Prototyping

Once a basic wireframe and user flow is agreed upon, prototyping takes place. If familiar technology is being used this may be done in HTML, CSS and Javascript, in order for layouts and components to be re-used by developers - Or in Figma or XD. (Personally I find Invision limited in the prototyping phase) These prototypes are used for both user interviews - to test the functionality and flow - as well as for a first level of tech feasibility. Wireframes and Prototypes evolve during the project and should not be seen as static assets

User Interface - Design

My design process starts from the prototyping stage - exploring the look and feel that best suits the application, and testing the user reaction to the design assets as the functionality is tested in the prototype. If there is an existing CI or design bible, that is used for any prototypes that will be seen by the user - this ensures that the look and feel is consistent with what the users expect from the brand. If there is no existing design, then design guides and story-books are created from final assets, taking into account branding requirements and other mediums that the design may be used in. Figma and XD have been my tools of choice to document and share design assets such as fonts, icons and component design - but they can be limiting when communicating micro animations and functionality
